“The trouble is, you think you have time.” (Jack Kornfield)
David,
You are my closest friend (really). I have totally enjoyed every moment that we have spent together over the past 22 years. Starting with our time in Santa Fe, then Chicago, Europe, New York, continuing to today. So many memories…Sea World in San Diego, mountain biking, fishing in Iceland and Colorado, jazz in Aspen, our journeys, and, most of all our heart to heart talks.
Aristotle describes close friendship as “a single soul dwelling in two bodies”. A high standard, but a good description. I admire many things about you: your generosity, sense of humor, intelligence, sensitivity, love for living, exploratory nature, your desire to grow, your openness, to name a few traits.
I am increasingly aware of the finitude of life. Just when the party is starting, it is over. I hope to spend a good portion of my remaining hours with you.
Your friend,
Mark
What began all those years ago as a work relationship photographing your family out East developed into something so much more. Along the way, we shared a connected journey
watching your children grow and documenting your life’s biggest milestones in front of my camera for you to treasure. That truly blossomed into a deep and meaningful friendship that we love, honor and treasure.
Our shared love of discussing, playing and experiencing the joy of live music has opened so many “doors of perception.” It’s clear your generosity is genuine towards the betterment of our friendship – from acquiring that cool cajón drum so we could play in a band together at your backyard dinner party to an unforgettable birthday brass-pass experience at the foot of Steven Tyler’s piano in New Orleans for Jazzfest, to having the best time ever at the post-covid Great Lawn extravaganza in Central Park “We Love NYC: The Homecoming Concert” (which led to us having an amazing post show dinner b/c the show got stopped due to a rainstorm!), to intimate Blue Note dinner shows together at Marcus King.
Backyard home-made dinners out East and holiday meals at your fab new nyc townhouse showed us the effortlessness at which you move through life and provide experiences for your friends. We are grateful for your mentorship towards Jonah to help guide him as he began his career. There were so many thoughtful and intellectual conversations that we never wanted to end – b/c listening to your global perspectives was always captivating. You are a special human David – we are so fortunate to call you such a good friend and share your birthday celebration together. Cheers to so many more!!!
Let’s re-tell the story about Gary, Lois and David meeting up at a tea hut in Bali in 1991 and David’s mother, Rona (z”l), calling the place wondering if David was still alive!
I remember how we first met. A number of folks felt we should know one another given our aspen connection. We eventually got on a call and then met, and you told me of your focus on guitar and getting a masters in public health and then here we are years later, our lives intertwined in so many good ways. I adore you and your family- and enjoy getting to know you and them better every day. You are a true force and someone whose presence is felt. You absence coo like result in despair! We all appreciate the energy, intelligence and heart you bring to everything you do. So much passion in one human! Your impact on this earth is felt.
